Wild Coyote Spotted Relaxing on San Francisco Home’s Couch Residents in a San Francisco neighborhood received quite the surprise when they discovered a wild coyote lounging on an outdoor patio couch. Concerned for the animal’s well-being, the homeowner contacted San Francisco animal control officers, who determined that the coyote was simply enjoying the plush furniture and was in good health. Officer Mullen from Animal Care & Control San Francisco shared his encounter with the sleepy couch coyote. The animal appeared reluctant to move when approached by the resident. Mullen approached the coyote, engaging in a conversation and gently urging it to get up. The coyote eventually obliged, stretched, and made its way to the edge of the yard. It appeared to be a young, healthy male, possibly recently kicked out of its den, navigating its way through the city. After hopping over a wall, the coyote left the backyard and headed towards a more natural, wooded area. San Francisco is home to approximately 100 coyotes, and their population has remained consistent over the last decade or so, according to Animal Care & Control San Francisco. Coyote families typically consist of an alpha pair who mate for life, and their pups stay with them for over a year before they venture out to establish their own dens. Fall is a time when yearling pups begin searching for mates to start their own families. Animal Care & Control San Francisco encourages residents to report any coyote sightings through their website’s coyote sighting form. If there are concerns about a sick or injured coyote, individuals should contact dispatch at 415-554-9400. By working together, we can help keep this coyote population healthy and thriving in our urban jungle.
