Sanchez Steps, car crash investigation

Car Crashes Down Sanchez Steps in San Francisco Following Reported Carjacking

A video showing a car hurtling down the Sanchez Steps in San Francisco on Sunday has sparked a police investigation. The car, which flipped over an embankment and through a tree before landing upside down, was occupied by five individuals who fled the scene instead of waiting for first responders.

The incident occurred around 7:30 pm on Saturday, coinciding with a carjacking reported just two blocks away at 19th and Dolores. The five suspects involved in the carjacking reportedly approached a vehicle with a gun, ordered the driver out, and drove away in the stolen car.

Damage to the Sanchez Steps was still evident on Monday afternoon, with barricades and caution tape preventing access to the area. The San Francisco Police Department has yet to confirm whether the car involved in the crash was the same one stolen in the carjacking. However, the police report states that the stolen car was recovered, although no arrests have been made.

Witnesses rushed to the scene of the crash, attempting to help the individuals inside the car. However, all five occupants resisted aid and left the scene before police arrived. One woman involved in the crash can be heard repeatedly apologizing in the video of the incident.

The incident has sparked discussions among residents and local business owners about the rising crime rates in the area. Terry Asten Bennett, co-owner of Cliff’s Variety in the Castro and president of the Castro Merchant’s Association, emphasized the need for video evidence to protect oneself due to the high volume of unreported incidents.
