Athletes overcoming cardiac arrest, resilience

Elite Athletes Overcoming Cardiac Arrest

Bronny James, McDonald’s All American and USC freshman, recently suffered a cardiac arrest during practice and was hospitalised. His condition is currently stable. This incident is the latest in a series of similar medical emergencies among elite athletes.

One such case is Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who collapsed during a Monday Night Football game. Thanks to the quick actions of paramedics and team doctors who performed CPR, Hamlin survived and, four months later, was cleared to resume his playing career.

In May 2021, Danish soccer star Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field during a UEFA Euro group stage match. After a successful recovery that included receiving a pacemaker, Eriksen returned to international play 17 months after his on-field collapse.

In a case particularly similar to Bronny James’, Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Keyontae Johnson collapsed on the court during a basketball game in December 2020. After being placed in a medically induced coma, he regained consciousness and was given the all-clear to resume his playing career nearly two years later.

These athletes’ experiences highlight the potential for recovery and the importance of immediate medical response during such emergencies. As personal injury bloggers, we often discuss the various health risks associated with professional sports. These stories remind us of the resilience of these athletes and the critical role of proper medical care in their careers.
