The Bay Area has seen a disturbing surge in freeway shootings since the start of 2023. A total of 21 shootings have been reported on Bay Area freeways, and the trend shows no sign of abatement.
Certain freeways, such as Interstate 580 in Oakland, seem to be more prone to these incidents, with at least eight shootings reported since the start of the year. Closely following is Interstate 880, also running through Oakland, with seven reported freeway shootings.
One of the most tragic shootings occurred in April on I-880 in Fremont, where five-year-old Eliyanah Crisostomo lost her life when a stray bullet from a gunfight between vehicles hit her.
