An investigation at a warehouse in Reedley, California, has uncovered an extensive illegal medical lab, complete with bioengineered mice and infectious agents. The alarming discovery in April was prompted by an illegally attached garden hose at the back of the building.
Upon securing several search warrants to enter the property, officials discovered over 800 different chemicals, many of which could not be immediately identified. A special room housing about 1,000 white lab mice, 200 of which were already dead, was also found.
Along with the mice, thousands of vials – many containing biohazardous materials, including human blood and other unidentified substances – were discovered. The suspects claimed that they were conducting tests on the lab mice to support the development of COVID-19 test kits they had on site.
Testing by the Centers for Disease Control revealed the presence of at least 20 potentially infectious viral, bacterial, and parasitic agents, including E. Coli, malaria, and even COVID. Local, state, and federal agencies have since cooperated to remove the hazardous materials from the warehouse.
The owners, operating under the name Prestige Biotech, have been less than forthcoming with information, according to Joe Prado from the Fresno County Health Department. This case highlights the urgent need for stringent regulations and surveillance to prevent illicit activities that pose a significant risk to public health.
