TikTok Users Drinking Cleaning Powder for Health Benefits

A new trend is gaining traction on TikTok, where users are encouraging others to add borax to their water. Borax is a common cleaning product that some users claim can help reduce inflammation, joint pain, or even “detoxify” the body. However, health officials are warning of the potential health risks associated with this practice.

Borax, or sodium tetraborate decahydrate, is a chemical compound often used as laundry detergent, kitchen/bathroom cleaner, and even a bug and weed killer. Despite its many safe uses, borax is not approved for ingestion by humans.

Dr. S. Ruddy Rose, director of VCU Health’s Virginia Poison Center, states that ingesting borax can cause individuals to become very ill, leading to convulsions, gastrointestinal tract problems, heat burns, and even kidney damage.

Echoing this warning, the company behind 20 Mule Team Borax, a popular borax product, has cautioned against participating in the TikTok trend, stating, “20 Mule Team Borax has many uses but ingesting is not one of them.”

In the event that a child falls victim to this trend, Dr. Rose advises following up with the child’s pediatrician if they do not have any symptoms. However, if the child is vomiting, experiencing abdominal pain, has a seizure, or shows other severe symptoms, emergency medical attention should be sought.

With several videos recommending borax ingestion already removed from TikTok, social media users are urged to exercise caution when accepting medical advice from influencers or TikTok personalities.
