In Berkeley, police are investigating two fires that occurred at the same residence within one week, with suspicions of arson after gasoline was reported at both scenes.
The first fire was reported on July 19 around 5:35 a.m. on the 1100 block of Oxford Street. Flames and white smoke were visible from the exterior of a three-story residential building, with the siding of the entire south side of the building caught on fire. Residents reported a strip of gasoline fuel burning adjacent to the house during the incident. Thanks to one resident using a garden hose and a dry chemical extinguisher, the fire was extinguished. No injuries occurred in the fire, but due to the circumstances suggesting arson, the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) took over the investigation.
Just six days later, a second fire was reported at 3:55 a.m. at the same building. This time, the entire east side of the structure was ablaze. Witnesses reported a strong smell of gasoline, similar to the first incident. Some residents were treated for smoke inhalation. The Berkeley Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire and ensured all residents were safely evacuated. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist the displaced residents.
Currently, no arrests have been made in relation to these incidents. Anyone with further information about the fires is encouraged to contact BPD’s non-emergency line. This case highlights the dangers posed by arson and the need for thorough investigations to protect the safety of communities.
