A San Rafael Police Department (SRPD) officer was injured on Tuesday during the arrest of a suspect, identified as Rudy Manfredo Ipina-Guerra, 34, of San Rafael. Ipina-Guerra had an outstanding $100,000 warrant from Sonoma County.
An SRPD officer located Ipina-Guerra walking at the intersection of Harbor Street and Front Street just before 2:55 p.m. The officer attempted to detain Ipina-Guerra, who reportedly refused to cooperate.
When another officer arrived on the scene, they tried to take the suspect into custody. However, according to SRPD, Ipina-Guerra physically resisted and fought with the officers during the arrest, injuring one of them.
Additional backup arrived, and officers were successful in taking the suspect into custody. They found an imitation firearm BB gun concealed in his backpack.
Paramedics treated the injured officer at the scene before transporting them to a hospital for a non-life-threatening injury. The officer has since been discharged from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Ipina-Guerra was booked into Marin County Jail on charges related to the Sonoma County warrant, felony obstruction of an officer, battery on an officer, resistance of a police officer, and drug possession.
This incident underscores the hazards that law enforcement personnel face on a daily basis while performing their duty to keep communities safe.
