San Mateo Speed Limit Reduction

San Mateo Reduces Speed Limits near 13 Schools for Safety

San Mateo, California, has lowered speed limits around 13 public elementary and middle schools in an effort to enhance safety. According to city officials, the speed limits have been reduced to either 15 or 25 miles per hour.

The city council approved the new speed zones earlier this year, and they will be implemented in phases. The first phase involves public elementary and middle schools, the second phase will focus on private elementary and middle schools, and the third phase will extend to local high schools, spanning 38 roadway segments.

San Mateo City Mayor Amourence Lee stated, “As my children and yours return to school this week, I’m excited to share our City’s progress to reduce speed limits near schools. We all play a part in keeping our streets safe whether we walk, bike, or drive in San Mateo. This effort is part of a comprehensive approach to achieve Vision Zero and eliminate road fatalities in our City.”

The City of San Mateo has provided a map indicating the locations of the new reduced speed zones.

This move underscores the city’s commitment to traffic safety, particularly in areas populated by young students, and is a strong proactive step towards preventing road accidents.
