Lake Merritt Shooting Suspect Faces Charges

According to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office, the suspect in a fatal shooting outside the Lake Merritt BART station last week has been officially charged. Juan Martinez, 45, has been indicted on charges of murder, felony criminal threats, and additional sentencing enhancements.

The shooting happened on Tuesday, Aug. 8, shortly after 2:30 p.m., near the bus zones adjacent to the station. Based on information from BART police, the altercation was triggered by a dispute over an electric scooter.

Martinez is currently detained in Santa Rita Jail without bail. If convicted, he faces a possible prison sentence of 25 years to life, as stated by the District Attorney’s office.
