A Hemet police officer named Jacob Hobson is facing charges following an alleged assault of a woman during an arrest last month. The Hemet Police Department has charged Hobson with assault, likely to cause great bodily injury, and two counts of assault by a peace officer under color of authority. Additional sentencing enhancement allegations suggest that the assault caused significant brain injury.
The charges originate from an incident on July 23 when Hobson approached a group behind a gas station on the 1700 block of West Florida Avenue. Upon determining that a woman in the group had an outstanding felony warrant, Hobson attempted to take her into custody. The woman reportedly resisted as Hobson tried to handcuff her, leading to serious injuries.
Following the incident, the Hemet Police Department called for an investigation by the Riverside County sheriff’s and district attorney’s offices. Hobson was charged on Thursday after a “thorough investigation.”
Presently, Hobson is on administrative leave pending the completion of the Police Department’s internal investigation. Further details about the incident, the injured woman, and Officer Hobson have not been disclosed.
