In the East Bay area, a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s deputy was hospitalized following a vehicle crash during an overnight pursuit. The incident occurred around 1:55 a.m. when the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop in El Sobrante.
The suspect’s vehicle failed to stop at the deputy’s command, leading to a car chase that moved westbound on I-80 into Oakland and then eastbound on I-580. Near the intersection of I-580/SR-24 in Oakland, the suspect vehicle abruptly slammed its brakes and turned around, crashing into the pursuing sheriff patrol vehicle.
After the crash, the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was ultimately apprehended and taken into custody. The deputy was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure and was later released that morning.
Footage from the crash scene shows the aftermath of the chase and the ensuing crash. The incident underscores the potential hazards law enforcement officers face while in pursuit of suspects, and the necessary precautions in place to ensure their safety.
