Softball game and California Capitol

California Lawmaker Injured in Charity Softball Game

California Assemblymember Matt Haney was hospitalized following an injury he sustained during a friendly softball game with fellow lawmakers. Haney, a Democratic representative from San Francisco, dislocated his hip during the game, which took place at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.

The annual softball scrimmage, held on Monday, saw Democratic and Republican legislators from Northern and Southern California face off on the field. This long-standing event, which has been running for 20 years, raises funds for charitable causes. This year, the proceeds went to Sacramento’s Mustard Seed School, an institution that primarily serves children from unhoused families.

Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, a Democrat from Sacramento, reflected on the camaraderie of the evening, saying, “We battle it out in the Capitol most days, but tonight we’re out at the softball field having some fun.”

Several Southern California lawmakers had to withdraw from the game to aid their districts in recovering from the damages caused by Tropical Storm Hilary. After sustaining his injury, Haney was taken to the hospital, accompanied by Assemblymember Ash Kalra, a Democrat from San Jose.

Despite the setback, Haney’s commitment to his legislative duties remains strong. His office confirmed on Tuesday that he was feeling “great” and has resumed his participation in committee hearings. This incident underscores the unexpected hazards that can occur even during leisurely activities, and the importance of immediate medical attention following an injury.
