Military Jet Crashes Near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar

A jet crashed near the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in San Diego late on Thursday night.

Base officials confirmed that an F/A-18 Hornet went down around 11:54 p.m. in a remote area east of Interstate 15. The crash site is reportedly on government property.

The aircraft was not part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing but had been operating out of MCAS Miramar, according to a news release from MCAS.

At this time, it is not clear if anyone was injured in the crash. Officials have stated that search-and-rescue operations are currently underway.

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to the crash and worked on extinguishing the fire from the downed plane until approximately 6 a.m. on Friday, according to Mónica Muñoz, media services manager for SDFD.
