A man from Anaheim accused of murdering his girlfriend and leaving her body in a dumpster in an alleyway has been found guilty.
Following a trial, Amer Alhasan, 33, was convicted of first-degree murder for the 2018 death of Tiyanie Ly, who was 38 at the time, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Alhasan was arrested on October 31, 2018, at LAX airport as he attempted to flee the country a day after Ly’s body was discovered, as reported by Anaheim police.
Ly, a mother of three young children and resident of Santa Ana, was found by a man picking through a dumpster for recyclables on the 2100 block of South Balboa Plaza. Her body was stuffed inside a suitcase-type bag and left in a dumpster behind an Anaheim residential complex.
Alhasan, identified as the boyfriend of the victim, was later pinpointed as the suspect and charged with murder on November 2, 2018.
At the time of her death, Ly’s loved ones had been unable to contact her, but they had not yet reported her missing, according to police.
Ly’s family became concerned when she didn’t return home from work. After learning about the grim discovery on the news the next morning, the family contacted the police, suspecting that Ly might have been the victim.
Ly, who lived with her parents and her three children – a daughter aged 10 and two sons aged 8 and 4 at the time, was known to keep her personal life private. Her family did not know much about Alhasan.
Alhasan was apprehended shortly before he was due to board a flight to Jordan. He was found with “a significant amount of personal belongings” during his arrest, according to police.
At that time, police had reports that Alhasan may have recently committed a sexual assault in Jordan, where he had family ties, before escaping back to the U.S.
Alhasan was found guilty of first-degree murder and is expected to be sentenced in the near future, according to the DA’s office.
