Tragedy Strikes in Long Beach: Woman Killed in Apparent Intentional Crash
LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA – A horrifying incident unfolded in Long Beach on Saturday evening, leaving one woman dead and several others injured. The crash, which involved multiple pedestrians and occupied cars, is now believed to have been intentional, according to new information from the Long Beach Police Department.
The collision occurred at around 6:34 p.m. near the area of Aquarium Way and Shoreline Drive. First responders arrived at the scene to find a woman lying in the roadway, indicating that she had been struck by a vehicle. Despite the efforts of the Long Beach Fire Department, the victim, identified as Romelia Cuarenta Aguilar, 60, of Long Beach, tragically succumbed to her injuries.
In addition to the loss of Ms. Aguilar, several other individuals were injured in the crash. While authorities have not disclosed the exact number of victims transported to nearby hospitals, they have confirmed that all are in stable condition. Our thoughts go out to the victims and their families as they recover from this traumatic event.
During the preliminary investigation, evidence emerged suggesting that the collision was intentional. The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Los Angeles resident Khalid Yagobbi, was driving a Chevrolet Bolt eastbound in the westbound lanes of Shoreline Drive at Aquarium Way. Witnesses reported that Yagobbi was traveling at a high rate of speed and did not slow down as he drove through a red light, striking pedestrians and multiple occupied vehicles.
Given the “suspicious circumstances” surrounding the incident, the FBI was called to the scene to assist in the investigation. While there is currently no indication that this was an act of terror or related to the violence in Israel, authorities are continuing their inquiry to gather all relevant information.
Yagobbi, who remained at the scene, was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment before being transferred to the Long Beach City Jail. He has been charged with murder and is currently being held on $2,000,000 bail. The motive behind the crash has yet to be established, leaving investigators with many unanswered questions.
