Cleveland Browns Stun Undefeated 49ers, Halt Winning Streak and Hand Brock Purdy First Loss
CLEVELAND, OHIO – In a stunning upset, the Cleveland Browns defeated the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers, ending their impressive regular-season winning streak of 15 games. The Browns won the game 19-17 after rookie Jake Moody missed a 41-yard field goal with six seconds remaining. This loss also marked quarterback Brock Purdy’s first defeat as a starter in the NFL.
Despite missing their star quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was sidelined with a bruised right shoulder, the Browns managed to pull off an unexpected victory. Kicker Dustin Hopkins was instrumental in their success, scoring four field goals throughout the game, including the game-winner with only 1:40 left on the clock. The winning drive was aided by a disputed unnecessary roughness call against the 49ers.
San Francisco entered the game with an air of invincibility after a dominant performance against the Dallas Cowboys, winning 42-10. However, the Browns’ defense rose to the occasion, stifling the 49ers’ offense. Additionally, San Francisco faced challenges due to injuries, with playmakers Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel both leaving the game early.
The Browns’ P.J. Walker, who was elevated from the practice squad, outplayed Purdy, the 49ers’ young quarterback. Purdy threw his first interception of the season and finished the game with only 125 passing yards. Prior to this loss, Purdy had won all ten of his NFL starts.
Despite the disappointment, Purdy almost engineered a remarkable comeback in the final minutes of the game. He led the 49ers into field goal range, giving Moody a chance to secure a victory. Unfortunately, Moody’s attempt veered to the right, sealing the Browns’ unexpected triumph.
The Browns were considered significant underdogs, particularly after ruling out Watson’s involvement. However, Walker, who was signed in August, exhibited composure during Cleveland’s final drive, setting up Hopkins for the game-winning kick. The Browns also benefited from a roughness penalty against Tashaun Gipson Sr., a safety for the 49ers who previously played four seasons with the Browns.
The 49ers had been favored to win the game from the start of the week, and their odds increased further when Watson was ruled out. Nevertheless, the Browns defied expectations, proving that anything can happen in the NFL.
