California Lawyers Disbarred: Upholding the Integrity of the Legal Profession
In a recent announcement, the State Bar of California has disbarred three attorneys, highlighting the importance of maintaining ethical standards within the legal profession. These cases involve serious offenses, including possession of child pornography, distribution of illegal narcotics, and misrepresentation.
One of the most high-profile incidents involves Raymond Joseph Liddy, a former Deputy Attorney General in the California Department of Justice and the son of G. Gordon Liddy, a key figure in the Watergate scandal. Liddy was convicted of possessing child pornography, with sexually explicit images of minors found on his personal devices. He has been sentenced to five years of probation, and his disbarment was officially announced on October 15.
Another attorney, Jackie P. Ferrari, was convicted of felony drug charges related to the distribution of oxycodone. Following an investigation into the overdose death of a 22-year-old woman, it was discovered that Ferrari had been selling oxycodone pills on Craigslist using coded names. She failed to respond to the disbarment proceedings, leading to the official disbarment taking effect at the end of September.
Michael Ralph McCabe, a Redding attorney, was disbarred for unauthorized practice of law and other counts of misrepresentation. He mishandled a civil case by failing to serve the defendants, neglecting to file necessary paperwork, and missing court appearances, resulting in the dismissal of the case. McCabe also practiced law while on administrative inactive status, disregarding court orders and failing to cooperate with the Bar’s investigation.
These disbarments serve as a reminder that attorneys are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards and responsibilities. The State Bar of California’s Office of Chief Trial Counsel diligently investigates allegations of misconduct to protect the public’s interests. Attorneys are presumed innocent unless found culpable by clear and convincing evidence.
It is crucial to maintain the integrity and trustworthiness of the legal profession. The disbarment of these attorneys sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated. The legal community must continue to hold itself accountable and take appropriate actions to ensure that all lawyers adhere to the ethical principles that underpin the profession.
