Antisemitic Riot at Russian Airport Sparks Outrage and Concern
A shocking incident unfolded at the main airport in Russia’s Dagestan region, where hundreds of people stormed the facility in an antisemitic riot. Reports indicate that the crowd chanted antisemitic slogans and targeted passengers arriving from Tel Aviv, Israel. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, led to the closure of the airport in Makhachkala, the capital of the predominantly Muslim region. Russian news agencies and social media platforms shared alarming footage and accounts of the disturbing event.
Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd surrounded an airliner belonging to Russian carrier Red Wings. Some individuals in the crowd were seen waving Palestinian flags, while others attempted to overturn a police car. The rioters also examined the passports of arriving passengers, apparently trying to identify those who were Israeli. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in over 20 people being injured, including police officers and civilians. Two individuals remain in critical condition.
In response to the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issued a statement expressing concern and calling on Russian law enforcement authorities to protect Israeli citizens and Jews. The Israeli ambassador to Russia is working closely with Russian officials to ensure the safety of Israelis and Jews in the country.
Authorities in Dagestan swiftly responded to the riot, closing the airport and mobilizing police forces to restore order. The Ministry of Internal Affairs for Russia’s North Caucasian Federal District, where Dagestan is located, announced that CCTV footage would be used to identify and bring those responsible for the violence to justice. The regional Dagestani government appealed to citizens to remain calm and refrain from participating in such protests, emphasizing the need for understanding and peace.
The Supreme Mufti of Dagestan, Sheikh Akhmad Afandi, also spoke out, urging residents to stop the unrest at the airport. He acknowledged the anger and frustration felt by many but emphasized that the issue could not be resolved through violent demonstrations. The governor of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, condemned the actions of the rioters and promised consequences for those involved, describing the incident as a betrayal of those who sacrificed their lives for the security of the Motherland.
In the aftermath of the incident, Russia’s civilian aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, announced that the airfield had been cleared, but the airport would remain closed to incoming aircraft until November 6.
