Close Call: Alcatraz Swimmers Encounter Cargo Ship in San Francisco Bay
In a heart-stopping incident, a group of swimmers embarking on a voyage from San Francisco to Alcatraz had a harrowing encounter with a massive cargo ship that abruptly cut off their path. The incident, currently under investigation by the United States Coast Guard, was captured on video, showing the cargo vessel cruising directly through the area where the swimmers were.
Concern for the safety of the swimmers was evident in the video, with an unidentified voice heard saying, “We got to have Coast Guard, or somebody check back there by the boat because there might have been swimmers that might have been swept into it.” Thankfully, no one was injured, and at the time of the incident, no Coast Guard vessels were deployed.
According to Odyssey Open Water Swimming, the group that organized the swim, the course had been cleared by the Coast Guard. The swim had obtained a permit well in advance, approximately a year prior. Warran Wallace of Odyssey Open Water Swimming expressed gratitude for the assistance of the USCG and stated that they are currently awaiting a response regarding the incident.
Despite the alarming encounter, all the swimmers in the water at the time managed to complete the swim. Once they reached the shore, they were promptly checked by staff to ensure their well-being. Wallace commended the quick response of the support team, paddlers, and swimmers in reacting to the unexpected breach of the course.
The incident of a large commercial vessel merging into the planned path of the swimmers is highly unusual. Wallace and the entire group are anxiously awaiting information on the reasons behind this occurrence. As the investigation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the potential dangers encountered by swimmers in open water, and the importance of proper precautions and coordination with authorities to ensure their safety.
