Daly City Mother’s Alleged Murder-Suicide Attempt Raises Concerns
In a deeply troubling case, a Daly City mother, Kelly Chan, appeared in court on Friday, accused of attempting to take her own life and that of her 9-year-old daughter. The incident came to light after a crisis hotline operator received a disturbing text message from Chan, asking about the time it would take to commit suicide using carbon monoxide and expressing her intention to take her daughter along with her.
The crisis hotline operator managed to trace Chan’s location and immediately alerted the authorities, prompting a welfare check on the family. Daly City Police officers arrived at the scene to find Chan’s ex-husband initially hesitant to allow them inside. However, the strong smell of gas and its immediate impact on the officers compelled them to force their way into the home.
Fortunately, Chan’s daughter was found unharmed. The failed murder-suicide attempt occurred just four days after Chan’s 39th birthday, adding to the complexity and concern surrounding the case.
The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office has charged Chan with first-degree attempted murder and felony child cruelty. In light of these charges, Chan’s defense attorney has requested an evaluation of her mental competency to stand trial. The judge, in response, has appointed a doctor to conduct the evaluation.
