Tragedy Strikes: Insights from Personal Injury Bloggers on San Jose Toddler’s Death
SAN JOSE, CA – The parents of an 18-month-old girl have been charged with murder following the child’s tragic death due to fentanyl and methamphetamine toxicity inside their San Jose home. According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, the toddler’s death occurred on August 12, and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office recorded a fentanyl blood concentration of 74 nanograms per milliliter in the child. This concentration is nearly 15 times the amount that can be fatal. Shockingly, both parents also had fentanyl and other opioids in their systems at the time, as reported by the DA’s office.
The father, Derek Vaughn Rayo, was served with a homicide warrant on Tuesday by the San Jose Police Department. Rayo had already been in custody since August 13 for an unrelated warrant. Authorities are currently searching for the mother, Kelly Gene Richardson, who has also been charged with murder.
The circumstances surrounding this tragedy are deeply distressing. When emergency medical technicians arrived at the couple’s home on Huddersfield Court in response to Rayo’s 911 call, they discovered that the toddler had been deceased for hours. Investigators later found a scraping tool with fentanyl residue on a rug underneath the baby’s body. Fentanyl was also discovered on a nightstand and desk in the master bedroom during a search of the home.
In addition to physical evidence, investigators seized multiple electronic devices from the residence. Text messages and social media messages on these devices revealed evidence of drug use within the home while the child was present. Disturbingly, the messages also indicated that the parents had requested others to leave narcotics in easily accessible areas within the house, putting the 18-month-old at risk.
