Remembering Kevin Nishita: A Tragic Loss for the KRON4 Family It has been two years since the tragic shooting of Kevin Nishita, a security guard for KRON4 in San Francisco. Nishita was providing security for one of KRON4’s reporters on 14th Street in Oakland when he was attacked by a group of men attempting to steal the reporter’s camera equipment. Sadly, Nishita passed away three days after the shooting at the age of 58. The reporter, fortunately, did not suffer any physical injuries. The alleged shooter, Shadihia Mitchell, and his alleged accomplice, Hershel Hale, were arrested in March of 2022 and charged with murder. They are currently awaiting trial. However, a third man involved in the incident, Laron Gilbert, remains at large. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force is actively searching for Gilbert, and a $40,000 reward has been offered for information leading to his arrest. Before working as a security guard for Bay Area television news stations, Nishita served as an officer for the Colma Police Department for many years. His dedication and service to the community were recognized and honored by his colleagues, as a drawing of Nishita hangs on a wall inside the police station as a daily reminder of his sacrifice. Losing Nishita has been an ongoing source of pain for his colleagues and friends. Colma police Cmdr. Sherwin Lum expressed the difficulty of coping with the loss, stating, “It is very difficult. We’re reminded daily of his loss.” Nishita was known for his energy, charisma, sense of humor, and his commitment to keeping the community safe. Nishita’s fair and compassionate nature was evident in his interactions with both colleagues and citizens. Lum praised Nishita’s ability to treat everyone fairly and described him as a mentor to his fellow officers. Nishita’s wife, Virginia, spoke about his innate desire to protect people, saying, “That was in his personality. To be that protector, to be that brave one that just wanted to protect people. He has a kind heart like that, and that’s why he joined the police force.” Beyond his professional life, Nishita was cherished as a friend. His longtime college friend, Scott, described him as down to earth, reliable, and always willing to lend a helping hand. Nishita’s passing is a devastating loss not only for his family but also for his friends, who treasured his friendship and the support he provided. In addition to his service with the Colma Police Department, Nishita also worked as a police officer for the San Jose, Hayward, and Oakland Housing Authority police departments. However, it is his role as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend that makes his untimely passing particularly heartbreaking. Nishita leaves behind two children and three grandchildren who continue to mourn his loss. As the case progresses, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price reassured the public that her office is diligently prosecuting the case. The two suspects in custody, Mitchell and Hale, are scheduled to appear in court on November 27. Price expressed confidence in the deputy assigned to the case and the victim advocates who are supporting the survivors of the attack.
