31 ‘Very Sick’ Babies Evacuated from Gaza’s Largest Hospital, Trauma Patients Remain In a heart-wrenching turn of events, thirty-one premature babies were safely transferred from Shifa Hospital in Gaza to another hospital in the south on Sunday. These babies, who were in critical condition due to dehydration, vomiting, hypothermia, and sepsis, were left without medical care when a power blackout shut down the hospital’s equipment. The situation became dire as food, water, and medical supplies ran out while Israeli forces battled Palestinian militants outside the hospital. The images of doctors struggling to keep these fragile newborns warm stirred global attention, shining a light on the desperate situation in Gaza. World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed on social media that the babies, along with six health workers and ten staff family members, were evacuated to a hospital in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. From there, they will be transported to Egypt for more specialized care. While the evacuation of the newborns brings some relief, it is important to remember that there are still hundreds of critically wounded patients stranded at Shifa Hospital. According to Mohamed Zaqout, the director of Gaza hospitals, there are still 291 patients at the hospital, including trauma patients with severely infected wounds and others with spinal injuries who cannot move. Tragically, four babies died in the two days preceding the WHO team’s visit. The situation at Shifa Hospital is dire and has been described as a “death zone.” Patients and health staff are terrified for their safety and health and are pleading for evacuation. It is imperative that immediate action is taken to ensure the safety and well-being of these patients. It is crucial to note that Israel has long alleged that Hamas maintains a command post inside and under Shifa Hospital, using civilians as cover. However, Hamas and hospital staff deny these allegations, and critics argue that Israel is recklessly endangering civilians. The hospital has become a symbol of the suffering endured by the people of Gaza, who face severe shortages of food, water, medicine, and fuel. Israeli troops have been stationed at the hospital for days and have claimed to find guns and other weapons. They have also shown reporters the entrance to a tunnel shaft. However, the Associated Press has not been able to independently verify these findings. In addition to the dire situation at Shifa Hospital, heavy fighting has been reported in the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza. Witnesses have described constant gunfire and tank shelling, creating a night of horror for those seeking refuge there. The commissioner-general of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees reported that 24 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school in the crowded U.N. shelter in Jabaliya. The violence continues to escalate in Gaza, with thousands of Palestinians killed and severe damage to infrastructure. More than 11,500 Palestinians have been killed, and a further 2,700 are believed to be buried under rubble. Israel has reported over 1,200 deaths on its side, mainly civilians killed during Hamas’ attack that resulted in the capture of hostages. Negotiations for a hostage release have been ongoing between Israel, the United States, and Qatar, which mediates with Hamas. A senior White House official has stated that a release of a large number of hostages would result in a significant pause in fighting and a surge of humanitarian relief. Qatar’s prime minister expressed confidence that a deal would soon be reached. The situation in Gaza is dire, with more than two-thirds of the population displaced from their homes. The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees is struggling to provide basic services to those seeking shelter. Seventeen of their facilities have been directly hit, and 176 people have been killed. The arrival of winter has worsened the situation, with cold winds and rain adding to the misery of those in tent camps. Israel has allowed the import of enough fuel to continue humanitarian operations for a few more days, but the power plant and water treatment systems remain shut down. The Defense Minister has indicated that the military plans to expand its offensive to southern Gaza, where Palestinian civilians have been told to seek refuge. However, the evacuation zone is already overcrowded with displaced civilians, raising concerns about where they will go if the offensive moves closer.
