In a harrowing incident in Milpitas, California, a man was arrested after reportedly holding a woman hostage in an apartment. The Milpitas Police Department responded to a call regarding a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex on the 100 block of Hillview Court on Saturday afternoon.
The caller reported an argument between a man and a woman on the second floor of the complex. The man was identified as 47-year-old Gabriel Ramirez of Milpitas, known to the officers as a probationer with multiple warrants.
On arriving at the scene, officers reported hearing signs of a consistent and physical fight inside the apartment. Ramirez, however, refused to open the door. As the altercation continued, officers overheard mention of a knife from inside the apartment.
An attempt was made to force entry into the apartment, but the door was barricaded with appliances. Despite the escalating situation, Ramirez refused to let the woman leave the apartment.
The Hostage Negotiations Team (HNT) was called to the scene and spent around 5 hours trying to negotiate with Ramirez, who eventually allowed the woman to leave. At this point, the SWAT team was also brought in.
Despite the woman’s release, Ramirez remained uncooperative and refused to surrender. Ultimately, the SWAT team was forced to break into the residence and detain Ramirez.
Ramirez was subsequently taken into custody and booked into county jail. He faces charges of domestic violence, false imprisonment, assault on an officer, assault/battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of an illegal weapon.
