The San Jose Police Department has arrested a suspect believed to be involved in a series of robberies where stolen vehicles were used to break into smoke shops. The suspect, identified as Jose Cabellos, was investigated following over 10 commercial burglaries of smoke shops between March and April.
However, the arrest did not stop the crimes. Throughout July, more burglaries matching the same pattern took place. In all these incidents, the culprits used stolen Kias or Hyundais to ram into the shops’ exteriors, causing enough damage to enter the businesses. They would then seize merchandise and flee the scene.
The use of Kias and Hyundais is particularly noteworthy, as these vehicle models are considered among the easiest to steal. The SJPD Burglary Unit has identified a trend of 2010-2021 Kias and 2015-2021 Hyundais being used in similar crimes.
From a criminal law perspective, this case demonstrates the application of stolen vehicles in the commission of further crimes. It also raises concerns about vehicle security and the ease with which certain car models can be stolen, and subsequently used in criminal activities.
This case underscores the importance of robust law enforcement measures and ongoing work to apprehend other potential accomplices involved in these crimes. It also serves as a stark reminder to vehicle owners to ensure their cars are properly secured and valuables are not left in plain sight, as this can attract potential thieves.
