The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed charges against Makai Yusef Sanders and Kenyatta Kamar Jones of Hawthorne and Diavion Deshawna Mouton of Carson, all 22 years old, for their alleged involvement in these crimes. The charges include Hobbs Act robbery and using a firearm during a violent crime, highlighting the severity of their actions. According to federal authorities, the trio specifically targeted Rite Aid and Walgreens stores located in various cities, including Long Beach, Bellflower, South Los Angeles, Pasadena, Whittier, Lakewood, Monterey Park, Burbank, and Glendale. The robberies took place between August 9 and September 19, with the perpetrators often striking about an hour before closing time. One particular robbery that stood out to the DOJ was the September 19 incident at a Walgreens store in Glendale. Two armed individuals, believed to be Sanders and Jones, entered the store wearing masks and proceeded to rob a customer who was in the process of making a purchase. They held the victim at gunpoint and stole their iPhone. Additionally, a store employee, fearing for her life, was forced to accompany one of the robbers to the back of the store and open the safe. However, she managed to lock herself in the office and alert law enforcement. Although the robbers did not gain access to the safe, they escaped with four iPhones and approximately $776 from the cash registers before fleeing in a white Honda Civic. Fortunately, thanks to the diligent efforts of the police, the three suspects were apprehended a week later. Phone and GPS data were crucial in tracking their movements. At the time of their arrest, Jones and Sanders were found in possession of handguns consistent with the firearms used in the Walgreens robbery. Law enforcement also discovered clothing, including a black mask with a red logo, matching the attire one of the suspects wore during the crime.
