Cracking Down on Dangerous Street Takeovers: CHP Receives Federal Grant
In an ongoing effort to combat reckless driving, illegal street racing, and street takeovers, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has been awarded a $2 million grant by the Biden Administration. The grant aims to decrease the number of fatal and injury traffic crashes caused by these illegal and dangerous activities. This funding is in addition to the more than $5.5 million already allocated by the state government for crackdown initiatives.
With the grant, the CHP plans to utilize community outreach efforts and enforcement measures to protect the safety and well-being of California’s communities and ensure the continued safety of its roadways. Street takeovers have been a significant problem, with CHP officers responding to over 7,300 incidents of illegal street takeovers in 2021 alone. This resulted in as many as 123,000 participants engaging in these activities. While the number decreased in 2022, there is still significant work to be done to address this issue.
In addition to street takeovers, speeding and street racing remain areas of concern for the CHP. The agency stated that incidents resulting from unsafe driving behaviors, such as motorists exceeding speeds of 100 mph on state highways, illegal street racing, sideshow activities, and speed-related crashes, are occurring at an alarming rate.
To tackle these dangerous activities, the CHP and other law enforcement agencies have increased their focus on establishing task forces and conducting enhanced speed enforcement operations on vital thoroughfares in the state. As a result, over 31,000 tickets were issued to individuals caught driving over 100 mph between January 2022 and June 2023. Additionally, social media campaigns have been launched to raise awareness about the dangers and risks associated with street racing and reckless driving behaviors.
Commissioner Sean Duryee emphasized that illegal street racing and sideshows go beyond being reckless activities
