In Santa Clara, an 85-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Homestead Road and Maryann Drive on Friday night, according to local police.
The incident took place just before 9 p.m., when the man was crossing the street within a crosswalk and was hit by a Toyota pickup truck traveling westbound on Homestead Road. Despite the efforts of police and fire crews who arrived at the scene and administered CPR, the man was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Toyota, a 55-year-old resident of Cupertino, remained at the scene after the crash and cooperated with the police. Preliminary investigations indicate that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have contributed to the incident.
The identity of the victim is being withheld until the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner notifies the next of kin.
