Fatal Pursuit Ends in Tragedy in San Bernardino County
A destructive pursuit in San Bernardino County on Thursday resulted in the death of a suspect. The incident began when officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle near Mt. Vernon and Johnston Avenue in Colton at approximately 10:39 a.m.
Colton police located the stolen vehicle, a 1999 red Ford Expedition SUV, and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the driver, identified as an adult male, refused to yield and led the officers on a high-speed chase.
The pursuit continued as the suspect drove northbound on Mount Vernon and eventually turned east onto 2nd Street in San Bernardino. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when the suspect crashed into another vehicle that was exiting the 215 Freeway onto 2nd Street.
The impact of the collision caused the suspect’s vehicle to collide with a nearby traffic signal pole. As officers approached the scene, they discovered that the suspect had been killed instantly upon impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim who was struck by the suspect’s vehicle was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed at this time.
