Influencer Sentenced to Prison for Staging California Plane Crash
LOS ANGELES, California – Trevor Daniel Jacob, a 30-year-old influencer, has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for obstructing an investigation into a staged California plane crash. Jacob, an experienced pilot and skydiver, pleaded guilty to one count of destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation.
The incident occurred in December 2021 when Jacob released a YouTube video titled “I Crashed My Airplane.” The video purported to show his small plane experiencing engine failure over the mountainous Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara County. Jacob, already wearing a parachute, jumped out of the plane with a selfie stick camera in hand, capturing his jump and the aircraft’s plunge.
The U.S. Justice Department revealed that Jacob destroyed the wreckage of the plane in an attempt to obstruct the investigation. He hiked to the crash site after landing, recovered video footage from the onboard cameras, and later cut up the plane’s parts, disposing of them in trash bins.
It was uncovered that Jacob had a sponsorship deal to promote a company’s product in the video he planned to post, and he never intended to complete the flight. When federal investigators contacted him about the crash, Jacob initially lied about the location of the wreckage.
This case highlights the dangers of staging events for the sake of social media content. Not only did Jacob put himself at risk by jumping out of a plane, but he also obstructed a federal investigation by destroying the evidence. As personal injury bloggers, we emphasize the importance of responsible content creation and the potential consequences that can arise from reckless actions.
In this instance, Jacob’s actions not only resulted in his own legal consequences but also had repercussions for his pilot license. The Federal Aviation Administration revoked his license in 2022.
Let this serve as a reminder that ethical and responsible behavior should be at the forefront of our actions, both online and offline. Influencers have a unique platform and the power to inspire and educate their audience. It is crucial to use that influence wisely and with consideration for the potential impact on others.
