Tow Truck and Crashed Cars

Multi-Vehicle Crash Closes Lanes on 5 Freeway in Newhall

Several lanes on the southbound 5 Freeway in the Newhall area were closed for hours on Thursday morning following a crash involving a pickup truck that hit the center divider.

The incident was reported around 3:45 a.m. near the 14 Freeway interchange and just past Calgrove Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic incident log. The pickup truck was initially blocking two freeway lanes but the situation escalated into a multi-vehicle crash when two other cars became involved.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a disabled big rig also blocked the slow lane after hitting debris from the crash.

Due to the uncertainty of potential injuries, officials issued a SigAlert on the southbound side of the freeway. Two freeway lanes remained blocked as of 6 a.m.

Footage from the scene showed a tow truck removing the last of the vehicles involved, with traffic backed up to McBean Parkway. This incident exemplifies the unpredictable nature of road travel and the importance of strict adherence to traffic laws and regulations to minimize the risk of accidents.
