An eye-catching mural paying tribute to the famous mountain lion, P-22, was unveiled in West Hollywood on Friday night. The artwork, titled “Keep LA WILD,” depicts the majestic cougar with a monarch butterfly resting on his nose.
Corie Mattie, the artist behind the piece, collaborated with The National Wildlife Federation to create her third mural. P-22, who roamed the Hollywood Hills for over a decade, was humanely euthanized in December 2022 after being struck by a car near Griffith Park.
The mountain lion’s death shined a spotlight on California’s endangered mountain lion population and their dwindling genetic diversity. P-22 has since become a symbol for wildlife conservation in Los Angeles.
Mattie’s mural is more than an artistic tribute
