In a recent incident at Solstice Canyon in Malibu, officials from the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area announced the temporary closure of the park after a mountain lion attempted to attack a small, leashed dog walking with its owner. Thankfully, the hiker intervened and prevented any harm to the dog, but suffered a minor puncture wound and scratch on his hand in the process.
Following the incident, National Park Service rangers provided the hiker with immediate first aid. As a precautionary measure, the park was closed until the situation could be assessed by wildlife biologists, as a second young mountain lion was also spotted in the area.
Officials stress that mountain lions are unpredictable wild animals, and while conflicts with humans are rare, there is always a risk when recreating in areas inhabited by these creatures. In the event of an encounter with a mountain lion, experts recommend making yourself appear as large and intimidating as possible by yelling, waving your arms, and even throwing objects in its direction. Slowly backing away and allowing space for the mountain lion to move away is also advised. It is crucial not to turn your back and run, as this may trigger the animal’s instinct to chase.
To ensure the safety of visitors and their pets, the National Park Service requires all pets to be on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times.
