Remains Found in 1987 Identified as Washington State Man

Remains discovered in a desert in San Bernardino County in 1987 were identified on Wednesday as those of Dennis Earl Seger, a 51-year-old man from Washington state, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office.

Seger was reported missing to the Los Angeles Police Department by his family members in 1986. His body was discovered in a remote desert area about eight miles north of Harvard Road and the 15 Freeway by off-roading motorists on November 23, 1987.

Detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division responded and took over the investigation. However, with no identifying belongings, suspects, or other investigative leads present at the time, the case went cold.

A bone fragment from the remains was later sent to the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Forensic Services for DNA extraction, comparison, and analysis. As part of LAPD’s investigation, Seger’s family members provided their DNA for comparison. A positive match was confirmed, and his loved ones were notified of the discovery.

According to authorities, there was “no evidence to show Seger died as a result of an assault or any other criminal action from another person.” No further details regarding a possible cause of death have been released.

This case underscores the significant developments in forensic science that aid in solving cold cases and bringing closure to families. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Detective Edward Hernandez or submit anonymous tips through We-Tip.
