Retail Theft: A Threat to Businesses and Communities
The recent arrest of two individuals involved in organized retail theft at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Santa Rosa highlights the ongoing problem of retail theft and its detrimental impact on businesses and communities. The incident, which resulted in more than $900 worth of stolen merchandise, serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and collaboration in combating this type of crime.
On Wednesday, officers from the Santa Rosa Police Department responded to a report of petty theft at the Dick’s Sporting Goods located on Cleveland Avenue. According to police, a suspect was observed stealing a significant amount of merchandise before making their escape in a white Mercedes Benz. The store’s security team promptly provided the police with a description of the suspect, the fleeing vehicle, and its license plate.
With this valuable information in hand, the SRPD officers initiated an immediate search for the vehicle. Two officers strategically positioned themselves near Highway 101 south, anticipating that the suspect might pass through that area. Their instincts proved correct when the white Mercedes drove past them. The officers wasted no time in initiating a traffic stop, prompting the driver, identified as Michael Lyons, to comply and pull over in the parking lot of a nearby hotel.
However, the passenger, Evan Thomas, had different plans and attempted to evade capture by fleeing on foot. Thomas’s escape route involved jumping several fences and even crossing Highway 101 towards Santa Rosa Avenue. Nevertheless, law enforcement persevered and located him in the 2600 block of Santa Rosa Avenue, where he was taken into custody.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers made an alarming discovery. In addition to the stolen merchandise from Dick’s Sporting Goods, they found property believed to be stolen from two other businesses, along with burglary tools and items used for concealing stolen goods. The thorough investigation conducted by the Dick’s Sporting Goods security team revealed that Thomas had been responsible for multiple thefts from the store since July 2022, amounting to a staggering $3,185 in stolen merchandise.
As a result of their criminal activities, both Lyons and Thomas now face serious charges. Lyons, a 56-year-old transient from Santa Rosa, was arrested and booked on charges including felony organized retail crime theft, felony commercial burglary, misdemeanor possession of burglary tools, and felony violation of post-release community supervision. Thomas, a 30-year-old Sebastopol resident, was arrested and booked on charges of felony organized retail crime theft, felony commercial burglary, misdemeanor possession of burglary tools, and misdemeanor obstruction of a peace officer.
While the apprehension of these individuals provides a small victory in the fight against retail theft, it is essential to recognize that this incident is just one of many that occur on a daily basis.
