Intersection with Safety Improvements

Safety Improvements Made to Intersection Following Fatal Accident

The San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority (SFMTA) has implemented changes to an intersection near the Interstate 280 entrance, where a 4-year-old girl was tragically killed in a crosswalk last week. The SFMTA announced on Friday that it had reduced the two right turn lanes from 4th Street onto King Street to a single lane.

This change aims to slow down traffic and lessen the conflict between turning cars and pedestrians using the crosswalk.

The SFMTA stated that this move was made “in response to last week’s tragedy.”

The death of the 4-year-old girl, whose father also sustained life-threatening injuries, sparked widespread outcry from the community, city leaders, and safety advocates. On Monday, San Francisco Mayor London Breed called for immediate safety improvements to the South of Market intersection.

The driver involved in the fatal accident, a 71-year-old woman, was arrested and charged with three counts of failure to yield to pedestrians and vehicular manslaughter.
