The suspect in a shooting at Mahany Park in Roseville, which resulted in the death of a 72-year-old man and injuries to two others, has escaped from Sutter Roseville Medical Center, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Eric Abril, had been in custody since April on charges of murder and attempted murder. He reportedly escaped from the hospital early Sunday morning after being transported there from the Placer County jail.
Various law enforcement agencies, including the sheriff’s office and Roseville Police, are involved in the ongoing search for Abril. He was last seen wearing an orange jumpsuit and is described as six feet tall, weighing around 175 pounds, with brown hair. The public is urged to call 911 immediately if they spot Abril.
Abril was initially arrested on April 6 in connection to a shooting that resulted in the death of Roseville resident James MacEagan. MacEagan’s wife, Patricia, and a California Highway Patrol officer were also wounded in the incident. Abril is accused of taking the couple hostage as law enforcement attempted to apprehend him on a separate warrant. Despite being wounded during the standoff, Abril has pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder and attempted murder.
