Shoplifting Suspect Shot by Guard at San Carlos Home Depot Charged with Assault

A suspected shoplifter, who was shot by a security guard at a Home Depot in San Carlos, California, has been charged with assault. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Jonathon Lee Mackey, allegedly attacked the guard during an attempted shoplifting incident on August 7.

The event unfolded around 10 p.m. at the Home Depot store located at 1125 Old County Road. Mackey reportedly entered the store and stole several tools.

A confrontation ensued when an armed security guard approached Mackey. The physical encounter escalated, and Mackey managed to gain control of the guard’s baton. He then struck the guard in the head and face, according to police.

Mackey also allegedly threw the baton through a glass window near the store’s entrance. In response, the guard fired two shots at Mackey, with at least one bullet hitting him.

A San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputy, who was nearby, heard the gunshots and responded to the scene. The deputy arrested Mackey. Both Mackey and the guard sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Mackey was later booked into San Mateo County Jail, and on Thursday, the district attorney announced charges against him. These include assault with a deadly weapon with special allegation-great bodily injury, and attempted second degree robbery with a special allegation-great bodily injury.

The case has been continued to September 7 for the superior court arraignment.
