Suspected DUI Crash on Byron Highway Results in One Fatality

A tragic accident occurred on Byron Highway Saturday night when a vehicle, suspected to be driven under the influence, crashed into a dirt embankment, leading to one fatality.

The California Highway Patrol received reports of the crash just south of Clifton Court around 11:07 p.m. A Chevrolet Suburban, carrying two people, veered off the roadway and into a dirt embankment while heading south on the highway.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene upon the arrival of CHP officers and emergency medical personnel. The driver, who sustained major injuries, was transported to a local hospital.

A DUI investigation was conducted at the hospital, resulting in the driver’s arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The crash remains under investigation. The California Highway Patrol is appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to contact their Contra Costa office in Martinez or via email.
