Tragedy Strikes in Will County: Hate Crime Claims Life of Innocent 6-Year-Old Boy WILL COUNTY, ILLINOIS – A horrifying act of hate unfolded in Will County on Saturday morning, leaving a 6-year-old boy dead and his mother seriously injured. Joseph Czuba, a 71-year-old man, has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, hate crime charges, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office. The attack took place at a home in unincorporated Plainfield Township, just outside Chicago. Authorities responded to reports of a woman being attacked by her landlord with a knife. The woman, identified as Hanaan Shahin, managed to fight off her attacker and call 911 from a bathroom in the home. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Czuba sitting outside with a laceration on his forehead. Upon entering the home, they discovered the victims – 6-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume, a Palestinian-American boy, and his mother Hanaan Shahin. Wadea had suffered 26 stab wounds, while Hanaan had been stabbed over a dozen times. Hanaan was rushed to the hospital in serious condition but is expected to survive. The Will County Sheriff’s Office determined that the victims were targeted due to their Muslim identity and the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel.
