Tragic DUI Crash on 5 Freeway Leaves 2 Dead SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. — In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a suspected DUI driver caused a devastating crash on the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway in Santa Fe Springs, resulting in the deaths of two passengers and the closure of the affected lanes. The driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The California Highway Patrol received reports of the crash at 1:39 a.m. near Carmenita Road. According to Sgt. Olivera of the CHP, a Honda Accord collided with a parked big rig on the freeway shoulder. The circumstances surrounding why the big rig was stopped remain unclear, but the driver of the Honda veered onto the shoulder and struck the back of the truck. Tragically, two male passengers, one of whom was found outside the vehicle, lost their lives in the collision. The driver of the Honda was transported to UCI Medical Center and subsequently arrested for DUI. Despite the severity of the crash, the driver was conscious and able to communicate with emergency responders as he was being taken to an ambulance. CHP has issued a SigAlert, resulting in the closure of all lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway at Carmenita Road.
