Over the weekend, a heartbreaking incident occurred in the unincorporated Westmont area, where two sisters were killed in a crash while riding in an Uber. The accident took place around 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Century Boulevard.
Kimberly Izquierdo, 27, Veronica Amezola, 23, and their childhood friend Juvelyn Arroyo, 23, were leaving a concert in South Los Angeles when another driver ran a red light and collided with their vehicle.
The sisters’ brother, Jose Izquierdo, spoke about the devastating loss his family is facing. He described their world as having gone dark without his two sisters, both of whom were starting promising careers. Kimberly had recently graduated from nursing school, while Veronica was passionate about environmental science and had recently started a job at an Orange County animal shelter.
The suspect in the crash, 31-year-old Gregory Black, is facing vehicular manslaughter charges. After hitting the vehicle carrying the victims, Black’s car spun out of control and landed on the center median. He was taken to a local hospital in stable condition and subsequently arrested.
The driver and another male passenger who were also in the car at the time of the crash are expected to recover. A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover the funeral expenses for the two sisters and their friend.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on the road and the importance of driving responsibly to ensure the safety of all road users.
