Suspect Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run of Oakland Grandmother

The Oakland Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect involved in a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of an elderly woman on June 16. The victim, 73-year-old Santu Maya of Oakland, was walking with her daughter when she was hit by a car at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Vicksburg Avenue. Witnesses suggested the car involved might have been street racing, but police did not mention racing in their arrest announcement.

Maya’s daughter, Sanjoo Verma, shared that the driver fled the scene after the accident. Maya, who had moved to the United States from Thailand only four months before the incident, left behind a 10-year-old granddaughter.

Police identified the suspect vehicle as a black Mercedes Benz and released photos of the car obtained from a nearby car wash after the crash.

A reward of $10,000 was offered to anyone providing information leading to an arrest in this case.
